If extensions are gone in the first seven days, the cause is almost never the client. Natural shed cannot remove a meaningful portion of a set that fast. Week one fallout is a bond failure, and bond failures come from the bed: adhesive quantity, cure conditions, isolation, weight matching, or a lash line that was never fully cleansed.
The tell is what comes off. If she brings you extensions with a visible bulb of natural lash attached at the base, that is shed, and it is fine. If the extensions come off bare, or with a hard clear nub of dried adhesive but no natural lash, the bond broke. That single distinction will resolve most of your week one complaints before you have opened her file.
Below are the errors that produce bare fallout, in the order they most often occur, with the correction for each.
Adhesive amount and the difference between a bond and a bead
Cyanoacrylate does not work like glue in the household sense. It is strongest as a thin film between two surfaces, and weakest as a blob. A visible bead at the base is not extra security. It is a thicker mass that cures unevenly, stays soft in the middle, and shears off as a whole unit within days.
Too little is a real failure too, and it looks different: the extension separates cleanly with nothing on it at all, usually within 48 hours, and often several at once from the same region of the lash line where you were working fast.
The correction is dip discipline. Dip to a consistent depth, wipe the excess on the adhesive surface rather than carrying it to the eye, and re-dip on a fixed rhythm rather than when you notice the tip has gone tacky. Adhesive on the tweezer tip that has already begun to cure will not bond properly no matter how you place it.
How to check your own quantity
At the end of a set, look at the base under magnification. You want a fine sleeve that follows the extension onto the natural lash for a short distance and stops. If you can see a distinct droplet shape, or if adjacent extensions are joined anywhere along their length, you are carrying too much.

Humidity and temperature outside the adhesive working range
Every adhesive bottle states a humidity and temperature range. That range is not marketing. Cyanoacrylate polymerizes on contact with moisture, so ambient humidity is literally the catalyst.
Below the stated range, cure is slow. The bond is still soft when the client sits up, gets rubbed by a sleeping position that night, and releases across the next two days. Above the range, cure is too fast, sometimes before you have seated the extension, which gives a brittle, shocked bond that snaps.
Two instruments fix this permanently, and both are cheap. A hygrometer on the wall near the bed, checked at the start of every appointment, not once a week. And whichever of a humidifier or a dehumidifier your climate calls for, running before the client arrives rather than during her set.
Write the reading in the appointment record. When a run of clients has poor week one retention, you want to be able to look back and see whether that week was 22 percent humidity.
Poor isolation and the twin lashes it creates
A stickie, or twin lash, is an extension bonded across two natural lashes that are in different growth phases. When the faster of the two moves, it pulls against the slower one. The result is a bond under constant mechanical stress, discomfort the client describes as pulling or tugging, and premature loss of both.
Worse, stickies damage the natural lash. A lash pulled out of its follicle before its cycle ends can grow back thinner, or slowly, and a client who develops sparse lashes will blame the service, correctly.
Isolation failures cluster. They happen in the inner corner where lashes grow dense and short, and they happen at the end of a long set when your hands are tired. Both are fixable with process rather than talent.
- Do a deliberate isolation check every twenty minutes, brushing through with a clean wand and lifting the line to look for joins.
- Work the inner corners while you are fresh, not last.
- Check both eyes with the client's eyes closed and again with them open at the end, since a stickie often only reveals itself when the lid moves.

Extension weight and diameter mismatched to the natural lash
A natural lash can only carry so much. Exceed it and the extension does not fall off, it comes off with the lash, or it drags the lash into a bent position where the bond fails at the join.
The variable that catches people out is length, because weight rises with both diameter and length. Going from 11mm to 14mm at the same diameter is a substantial increase in load and in leverage. That is why long, thick sets on fine lashes fail in week one while the same diameter at a shorter length holds.
A usable rule at the bed: map by the natural lash, not by the look the client asked for. Where her lashes are fine and short, in the inner corner and often at the very outer edge, drop both length and diameter. Where they are strong, through the middle and outer third, you have room. A set that respects the underlying lash line looks better anyway, because it follows her eye shape instead of fighting it.
If she wants dramatic length that her lashes cannot carry, the answer is a finer diameter or a lighter fan, not a heavier single. Explain the trade in terms she cares about: "I can give you that length, but at that thickness it will be off in a week. At a finer diameter you keep the length and it holds."
Cleansing skipped before application and residual oil on the lash line
Adhesive bonds to a clean, dry keratin surface. Anything between the two is a release layer. Sebum, makeup remover residue, moisturizer that migrated up from the cheek overnight, sunscreen, the oil from a client who touched her eyes in the waiting room.
Cleansing is not optional even when the client says she arrived with a bare face. Most people apply something within a few inches of the lash line every day, and the residue is invisible.
The sequence that works: a lash specific foaming cleanser applied with a soft brush, worked along the lash line and through the lashes, rinsed fully, then dried completely with a fan before any adhesive touches anything. Damp lashes create the same problem as excess humidity, only concentrated at the base.
Primer is not a substitute for cleansing. It is a final step to remove trace moisture and residue after cleansing, not a shortcut around it.

Aftercare given verbally and never reinforced in writing
You explain aftercare while she is putting her shoes on, half awake after two hours flat on her back. She retains almost none of it. Then she washes her face vigorously that night, sleeps face down, and comes back in five days annoyed.
Verbal aftercare is not a system. Written aftercare that arrives after she leaves is, because it reaches her at the moment she is about to do the thing.
Keep it short and specific to timing:
- The first few hours: no steam, no hot shower, no crying if you can help it, no swimming.
- Day one onward: cleanse daily with a lash safe foaming cleanser, brush through when dry.
- Sleeping: on your back or side, not face down into the pillow.
- Products: no oil based cleanser, remover or makeup near the lash line.
- Never pick, pull or trim. Message me instead.
Send that as a message she can search for later, not as a printed card that lives in her car. And send the sleeping and cleansing reminder again on day two, when the habit is actually forming.
Running a one week check in that returns useful information
A check in on day six or seven is the cheapest diagnostic you will ever run, and it does double duty as a retention touch. But it only works if you ask questions that separate the causes.
Ask three things, in this order:
- "Are the ones that came off bare, or do they have a little white bulb at the end?" This separates bond failure from shed.
- "Are the gaps spread out, or all in one area?" Clustered loss points to isolation, technique fatigue, or a friction spot from sleeping. Even loss points to adhesive or cure conditions.
- "What are you using to wash your face, and what side do you sleep on?" Asked without judgment, this catches the oil cleanser and the face down sleeper.
Then record the answers against that appointment, along with the humidity reading and what adhesive bottle you were on. Three or four records is usually enough to see the pattern. If every client from one week has even bare loss, look at your bottle and your hygrometer. If one client has clustered loss and everyone else is fine, look at her habits or at the region of the map where you were rushing.
Turning the diagnosis into a routine
Every fix here depends on having the record. What the room was doing, which bottle you were using, what the client reported at day seven, and whether the same problem appeared last cycle. Held in your head, that information disappears within a week.
